Through our programmes, we build knowledge and understanding of public interest news –

both to the general public, and to people who work in, or would like to work in, the public interest news sector.

Current programmes 

Local News Plan

The Local News Plans aim to set out a shared vision for the future of public interest news in six local areas. They will include commitments to support this vision from stakeholders such as local politicians, business leaders, civil society organisations and people with lived experience of relevant issues.

News for All

PINF is working with a range of partners to build a better local news economy for the future. Through the News for All campaign, we are calling on policymakers to support local news that adds democratic, economic and social value to local communities.

Past programmes 

PINF Leadership Programme - Autumn 2021
September - November 2021

An eight-week online programme - running from late September to late November - that aims to provide inspiration, knowledge and confidence for leaders of independent news publishers. It also aims to create a community of peers who can call on each other for ideas, advice and best practice.

PINF Emergency Fund Development Programme 
July-September 2020

Following on from the PINF Covid-19 Emergency Fund in June 2020, grantees participated in a professional development programme designed to help publishers work together on some of the most pressing challenges facing small, independent news providers in the digital age.

The programme explored a range of issues including reader and advertising revenue, community engagement and new, innovative ways of delivering news such as podcasting, with the insight of industry experts.
